Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, Tufts Health Plan and their parent, Point32Health, are all on the list of plans accepted at our Needham program. Here is what these plans typically cover for outpatient addiction treatment in Massachusetts, how authorization and copays usually work, and how to get an answer about your own plan in one call.

Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and Tufts Health Plan are the two big home-grown health plans in Massachusetts, and since their merger they share one parent company, Point32Health. Both names are still on member cards in 2026. Since late 2023, Point32Health manages behavioral health benefits itself rather than through an outside company, which in practice means one set of rules for the medical and the substance use side of your plan.

At our Needham center, Harvard Pilgrim and Tufts members typically use these levels of care:

Day Treatment. Many plans cover it when a clinical assessment supports it. Your plan may call it partial hospitalization, and authorization is usually approved before the first day.
Evening Treatment. Many plans cover it under their own program name. Some want authorization first, some only notification, and the plan decides which.
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT). The visits are covered like other outpatient care on most plans. The medication runs through your pharmacy benefit and its formulary.

Coverage depends on your plan. A Harvard Pilgrim HMO from a Boston employer, a Tufts PPO and a Health Connector plan can carry different deductibles, copays and authorization rules. We verify your benefits in one call and explain what applies to you before anything is scheduled.

Every level is outpatient. You sleep at home and keep your life around treatment. Detox, when it is needed first, is arranged by referral to a partner facility.

One reviewer for the whole plan: Point32Health reviews substance use care in-house, using the ASAM Criteria to match the request to a level of care. Our clinicians use the same framework, so the two conversations line up.

Authorization before Day Treatment: Day Treatment usually needs approval before day one. We send the assessment and treatment plan and manage the continued-stay reviews while you are in the program.

Evening Treatment depends on the plan: Some plans authorize it up front, others treat it like outpatient care with no approval step. Weekly outpatient visits rarely need approval. We check your plan's rule during the benefits call.

Deductible, copay, coinsurance: Most commercial plans apply the deductible first, then a copay per visit or a percentage of the allowed amount. HMO plans tend to use flat copays, PPO plans more often use coinsurance.

Massachusetts parity: State law requires most plans to cover medically necessary substance use treatment on the same terms as other medical care. Outpatient care can still need authorization, and that is the part we handle.

Harvard Pilgrim, Tufts Health Plan and Point32Health are all listed among the plans accepted at our Massachusetts program, at 392 Chestnut Street, Suite 200, Needham, MA 02492, just off Route 128 and about 30 minutes from downtown Boston, with Newton, Wellesley and Dedham each under 15 minutes away. Networks are plan-specific, so during the benefits check we confirm your exact plan against our contract.

These plans are also accepted at our Londonderry, NH center. If you live closer to Manchester or Nashua, read the New Hampshire version of this page, or call and admissions will point you to the right office.

One thing we say plainly: we are not in network with Medicare at this time. If Medicare is your primary coverage, call anyway. Admissions can point you to options, and FindTreatment.gov, the federal treatment locator, lists programs that accept it.

Does Tufts Health Plan cover Day Treatment?

Day Treatment is a covered level of care on most Tufts plans, often under the name partial hospitalization, and it usually needs approval before day one. Our clinicians send the assessment and treatment plan and handle the reviews.

Is Harvard Pilgrim the same as Tufts now?

They share a parent company, Point32Health, and one behavioral health review process, but they are still separate plans with separate networks and benefits.

Does Harvard Pilgrim cover Suboxone or Vivitrol?

The office visits are covered like other outpatient care on most plans. The medication goes through your pharmacy benefit, which may prefer one product over another. We check both sides in the same call.

Do you take Medicare or a Tufts Medicare plan?
