What TRICARE and the VA typically cover
Two different doors for military families and veterans
TRICARE and VA Community Care are separate programs with separate rules, and people often carry both. TRICARE is the health plan for active-duty service members, retirees, National Guard and Reserve members and their families. New Hampshire sits in the TRICARE East Region, administered by Humana Military. VA Community Care is how the Department of Veterans Affairs pays for care from a community provider like us when the VA cannot provide it itself in a reasonable time or distance. It starts with your VA care team, not with an insurance card.
TRICARE covers substance use disorder treatment across the outpatient levels of care we offer: partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, standard outpatient therapy and medication-assisted treatment. The plan you have changes how you get there. TRICARE Prime generally needs a referral from your primary care manager before specialty care. TRICARE Select lets you contact a network provider directly for outpatient care, though some levels still need authorization from Humana Military before they begin.
VA Community Care works from a referral. When the VA refers a veteran to us, the referral spells out the care that is approved and for how long. There is no separate insurance approval to chase. Our job is to deliver the care, keep the VA updated, and ask the VA for more when the treatment plan calls for it.

Levels of care
Levels of care military families and veterans use at our Londonderry center
Every level is outpatient, which suits people who are still working, still serving, or raising a family. Detox, when it is needed first, is arranged by referral to a partner facility.

Partial Hospitalization (PHP)
Our most structured day program, several hours a day on weekdays.

Intensive Outpatient (IOP), day or evening
Three-hour sessions several days a week. Evening IOP runs Monday to Thursday, 6 to 9 pm.

Outpatient (OP)
Weekly individual and group sessions, as a starting point or a step down.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
Suboxone, Vivitrol and related medication visits, overseen by our medical director.
TRICARE and VA Community Care are both listed among the plans accepted at our New Hampshire program, at 1D Commons Dr, Units 21 & 22, Londonderry, NH 03053, off Route 102 at I-93 Exit 4, about 15 minutes from Manchester and 30 minutes from the Manchester VA Medical Center. We are also an approved VA Community Care provider for Massachusetts veterans and work with TRICARE at our Needham, MA center, so call if you live closer to Boston.
Our Veterans and Trauma-Exposed Professionals program runs inside any level of care, with clinicians who understand the culture and the reasons people wait to ask for help.
One thing we say plainly: we are not in network with Medicare at this time. TRICARE For Life members, whose primary coverage is Medicare, should call anyway. Admissions can point you to options, and FindTreatment.gov lists programs that accept Medicare.
