UnitedHealthcare and Optum Coverage for Addiction Treatment in Massachusetts

UnitedHealthcare and Optum are both on the list of plans accepted at our Needham program, and for most members they are two halves of the same coverage. Here is what UnitedHealthcare plans typically cover for outpatient addiction treatment in Massachusetts, how Optum handles authorization, what copays usually look like, and how to get an answer about your own plan in one call.

UnitedHealthcare is the country's largest commercial insurer, and in Massachusetts it shows up mostly on employer plans, including plans from employers based in other states. The behavioral health side of almost every UnitedHealthcare plan is managed by Optum, its sister company, which is why both names appear on our accepted list. If your card says UnitedHealthcare, Optum reviews your substance use care.

At our Needham center, UnitedHealthcare members typically use these levels of care:

Day Treatment. Many plans cover it when a clinical assessment supports it. Optum will call it partial hospitalization, and authorization is usually approved before the first day.
Evening Treatment. Many plans cover it under their own program name. Whether Optum wants authorization first depends on the underlying plan.
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT). The visits are covered like other outpatient care on most plans. The medication runs through the pharmacy benefit, often managed by Optum Rx, and its formulary.

Coverage depends on your plan. A Choice Plus plan from a large employer and a Massachusetts small-group plan can pay differently. We verify your benefits in one call and tell you what applies to you before anything is scheduled.

Optum reviews the request: Optum Behavioral Health reviews substance use care against the ASAM Criteria, the same framework our clinicians use to recommend a level of care. Requests go through its provider portal, and our team knows the forms.

Authorization before Day Treatment: Day Treatment almost always needs approval before day one. We send the assessment and treatment plan and manage the continued-stay reviews while you are in the program.

Evening Treatment depends on the plan: Some UnitedHealthcare plans require authorization for it, some only notification, and weekly outpatient visits generally need neither. We check your plan's rule during the benefits call.

Deductible, copay, coinsurance: Most UnitedHealthcare plans apply the deductible first, then a copay per visit or a percentage of the allowed amount. Plans from employers in other states follow that employer's design, not Massachusetts rules.

Parity protects you: Federal parity law bars a plan from charging more, or limiting visits more tightly, for substance use treatment than for comparable medical care. If something looks off, we will raise it with the plan.

UnitedHealthcare and Optum are both listed among the plans accepted at our Massachusetts program, at 392 Chestnut Street, Suite 200, Needham, MA 02492, just off Route 128 and about 30 minutes from downtown Boston, with Newton, Wellesley and Dedham each under 15 minutes away. Networks are plan-specific, so during the benefits check we confirm your exact plan against our contract rather than assuming.

If you have a UnitedHealthcare plan and live closer to our Londonderry, NH center, call first. UnitedHealthcare is not on the published list for our New Hampshire program today, and admissions will tell you plainly which office, if either, your plan pays for.

One thing we say plainly: we are not in network with Medicare at this time. If Medicare is your primary coverage, call anyway. Admissions can point you to options, and FindTreatment.gov, the federal treatment locator, lists programs that accept it.

Does UnitedHealthcare cover Evening Treatment in Massachusetts?

Does UnitedHealthcare cover Day Treatment?

Day Treatment is a covered level of care on most UnitedHealthcare plans, reviewed by Optum as partial hospitalization, and it usually needs approval before day one. Our clinicians send the assessment and treatment plan and handle the reviews.

My card says Optum. Is that the same as UnitedHealthcare?

Usually, yes. Optum manages behavioral health for UnitedHealthcare plans and for some other plans too. Read us the plan name and member ID on the card and we will check exactly which benefits you have.

Does UnitedHealthcare cover Suboxone or Vivitrol?

The office visits are covered like other outpatient care on most plans. The medication goes through your pharmacy benefit, often Optum Rx, which may prefer one product over another. We check both sides in the same call.

Do you take Medicare or a UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plan?

We are not in network with Medicare at this time. If Medicare is your primary insurance, admissions can point you to options, and FindTreatment.gov lists programs that accept it.
